Transportation Plans
What expenses are reimbursable under the plan?
Certain work-related parking and mass transit expenses are covered under the plan.
Covered parking expenses are the cost of parking your car at a facility located at or near your office location (e.g. parking garage or lot) or the cost of parking at a facility located at or near a location from which you commute to work (e.g. Metro parking lot).
Covered mass transit expenses include the cost associated with taking public transportation or commuting to work in a van pool. Covered expenses associated with taking public transportation include the cost of a transit pass, token, farecard, voucher or similar item entitling you to transportation to and from work on a Mass Transit Facility. Van pooling expenses are those expenses incurred when you take a commuter highway vehicle. This vehicle must have a seating capacity of six or more adults (not including the driver), and at least 80 percent of the mileage use must be for purposes of transportation of employees between work and residences. The number of employees carried must be at least one-half of the adult seating capacity of such vehicle (not including the driver).
Your employer may issue you a debit card to use in purchasing your fare card, transit pass or transit voucher. In this instance the moneys are paid directly to the provider from your account.
In some cases your employer is required to obtain and distribute the fare card, transit pass or transit pass vouchers. In such cases you can still elect to have the cost of these passes redirected from your pay on a pre-tax basis, but you can not be reimbursed for any farecard, transit pass or transit voucher that you purchase on your own.
